Integrating GPS with Mobile Applications by Jonathan Lowe

The Global Positioning System, or GPS, is certainly a relevant part of most of our lives nowadays.  People use GPS for several reasons in their daily life and its role is ever increasing.  The most common use for GPS would be with vehicle navigation systems and driving directions.  However, as more mobile devices begin to include this system, the potential becomes far greater.  Here are some tips on how to integrate GPS into your system.

The first thing to consider is how GPS would be utilized in the application.  What purpose would having GPS functionality provide to the users?  With CrossForm, the idea was to have the application identify where the user was so that they could perform tasks quicker.  An example would be when a user needed to generate a work order while at a location.  GPS integration would be able to identify the location of the user and save him/her the step of having to enter that information.

After determining how to use the GPS functionality, the next step to integration would be bridging the gap between your application and the GPS.  The application would need to have a way to retrieve information from the GPS.  It should be able to go out and enable the GPS receiver in the mobile device and then retrieve the latitude, longitude and altitude.

Once you are capable of retrieving the values from the receiver, you would need to decide what to do with the information.  The location data provided can be used by your application to identify where a user is, what equipment a user is servicing, how far away the user is from a specified location, and so on.  You could even have the GPS receiver continuously update and provide real-time information on the location of the device to offer loss prevention measures.

As you can see, the GPS is becoming a considerable force in the realm of mobile applications.  The need for real-time location monitoring is growing as we become more dependent on our mobile devices.  As that need increases, CrossForm Mobile will expand to accommodate it with greater GPS integration.
